Shun Knife Set

Good knives are essential for chefs and even wannabe chefs like me. I'm hoping to get a Shun Knife Set maybe for my birthday. Good knives are worth their weight in gold!

It used to amaze me that professional chefs would actually travel to and from work with their knives. For example, French Chef Extraordinaire (and good friend) Steve Day would ride the London Subway (the "Tube") twice a day carrying his knife set. I'm not surprised anymore.

There are plenty of high end knives available, and the various Shun Knife Sets are great ones. Not surprisingly, they have several knife sets available including ones for cooks and steak knife sets.

An investment, and yes it is an "investment," in a Shun knife set will reap rewards for years. These are knives that should last a lifetime and that you'll never upgrade.

The Shun Classic 6-Piece Knife Set with Bamboo Block is perhaps their most popular. It includes an eight inch chef's knife, a utility knife, a paring knife, kitchen shears, and a very useful sharpening steel. Everything fits into a convenient bamboo storage block.

The knives are made with a core of VG-10 stainless steel and 16 layers of high-carbon stainless steel on each side, for a total of 33 layers of steel. They have the beautiful look of antique Damascus steel but are far more rust resistant, and have a patterned, layered, surface. They have an ergonomic Pakkawood handle and stainless steel end cap.

And amazingly, they are officially dishwasher safe!

Also very popular and a step up is the Shun Classic 9-Piece Block Set with Bamboo Block. It's similar, and and includes a 9 inch bread knife, 9 inch slicing knife, 8 inch chef's knife, 6 inch chef's knife, 6 inch utility knife, 3 1/2 inch paring knife, kitchen shears, and a sharpening steel, together with a bamboo storage block.

It's a bit more expensive, but I love the addition of the bread knife, not that you really need such a great quality knife just to cut bread.

More economical yet equally function is the Shun Classic 3-Piece Boxed Flat Set. It includes the 8 inch chef's knife, 6 inch utility knife, and 3 1/2-inch paring knife.
